In China, there’s a place called Chengkan Village. As far as well-preserved ancient architecture goes, Chengkan Village is at the top of the list, starting with its famously intact residential structures all the way down to the brick and wood carvings. For a better idea of the location of Chengkan Village, know that it’s in the Huizhou District of Huangshan City, which also plays host to other small Chinese villages.

With that, let’s take a look at some more good information about Chengkan Village and its intriguing layout that will be beneficial to your feng shui training:

  • Chengkan Village was first built in the early days of the Three Kingdoms Period—the kingdoms of Wei, Shu and Wu—between 220 and 280 A.D. Unfortunately, that time involved a massive battle for power, so it was not a great period for the people of China.
  • The original residential architectural design that makes Chengkan Village so interesting and known as an amazing feat was constructed during the Ming dynasty. Because there’s a lot of detail in the village’s buildings, plan on spending an entire day or so for your visit.
  • The design of Chengkan Village is likely not random. In fact, it is said that the layout of the village caters to one of the Eight Diagrams of the feng shui Bagua to ensure proper energy flow. It is also referred to as “Trigrams” in English. This focuses on the Kan Gua (water) to represent the movement of change. This is depicted in the I-Ching—the Book of Changes—hence the name Chengkan for the village.
  • Heads up! As you step out into the streets of Chengkan Village, you’ll feel as though you’ve fallen onto a strange path. It’s because of these intricately laid-out streets that they are often described as a maze. There are three main streets and 99 lanes made to criss-cross all over the village. But thanks to all the lovely hills and moving rivers surrounding Chengkan, this is one maze you might actually want to get lost in!
  • There may be further meaning to the village’s maze-like features: it keeps its people together. Throughout generations, the residents of Chengkan Village have cherished the street’s special layout as a way to become one with their natural surroundings. It’s also believed that the nearby Longxi River brings energy and fortune to all who reside within the village.
  • As far as ancient Anhui architecture is concerned, the homes of Chengkan Village represent it well. But other ancient village structures should also be acknowledged—including bridges, pavilions, water wells and architecture of the village’s ancestral temples. Such temples typically depict intricate engravings like beautiful flowers and creatively painted patterns that adorn doorframes and structural beams.
